New Monster - Ghostly Burden

Sorry, I realize it's Tuesday.  I'm a day late on my New Monster Monday.  But better late than never!

Today we're on letter "G," and our new monster is the Ghostly Burden.  This is a creepy form of ghost or haunt that can be used subtly to weigh down your PCs, drain their spirits, and literally anchor them to their death.

Ghostly Burdens are a form of spectral undead creature that latches on to life forms and acts as an intangible anchor (or monkey on the back), slowly weighing down the victim until movement slows down and eventually stops.  The victim will ultimately die if not saved.

Ghostly Burdens generally haunt graveyards and dungeons.  They cannot be seen or felt.  They will select a victim and “latch on.” No to hit roll is required.

The victim will immediately feel “not right” and extremely tired and lethargic, reducing movement by 1” and temporarily lowering STR, CON, DEX, hit points, “to hit,” and damage by 1.  Each day thereafter, those scores will be lowered again by the same amount.  As soon as either STR, CON, DEX or hit points reaches 0, the victim is dead.

Ghostly Burdens can’t be harmed by any weapon or spell except Remove Curse cast by a cleric of 7th level or higher.  They are turned as Ghosts.  Any one Cleric can only attempt one turn against a single Ghostly Burden.

  1. Scary, yet subtle. I imagine the first time you use it, the PCs will be going bananas trying to figure out what's going on.
