New Monster - Hobbit, Gray (Grobbit)

This week is the "H" monster: introducing the Hobbit, Gray (aka Grobbit).

I stole this little beastie from Arduin but totally changed it around.  Since Elves get their dark Drow cousins and Dwarfs get Duergars, shouldn't Hobbits get a little underworld love?

By the way, this could also be a "Monster as PC" candidate.

Grobbits (Gray Hobbits) are a race of Halfling which were banished from Halfling society due to their inherently wicked nature.  They were driven out and persecuted, eventually finding refuge in cavernous complexes and underground lairs.  Over the course of many hundreds of years, their skin turned a dark gray, they developed reddish eyes and infravision, and refined their crafts of warfare, magic and in particular missile expertise.  Grobbits are organized and tactical; they are also very territorial and have been known to fight vicious wars with creatures both good and bad.  Grobbits despise Halflings and will almost certainly attack on sight.

Grobbits wear thick armor made from the skin of giant lizards, snakes and other reptiles.  This gives them AC6.  Additionally, they are incredibly elusive and fast.  Thus, any man-sized creature (M) will strike at -1 to hit against Grobbits.  Any creatures larger than 7’ tall (or anything listed as L) will strike at -2.

In melee combat, Grobbits use small scimitars (damage as short sword).  However, their strength is with missile weapons.  Due to their dexterity and skill, Grobbits are +2 to hit with any missile weapon.  With slings, their specialty, Grobbits are +4 to hit.  They will even fire into melee.  In such cases, they lose the “to hit” bonus but only strike their own comrades on a 1.  Some Grobbits (10%) use spiked sling stones dipped in sleep-inducing poison (save vs. poison).

For every 25 Grobbits, one will be a Corporal (HD 1+2; AC5; D1-8).  In addition to the Corporals, for every 40 Grobbits one will be a Sergeant (HD2; AC5; D2-8).  Finally, any colonies with 50 or more Grobbits will have one Chief (HD3; AC4; D2-9).  Approximately 25% of any Grobbit colony is female and 25% is young.

Grobbits also have spell-casters (both MU’s and Clerics).  Approximately 2-3% of Grobbits are spell-casters, and 50% will be MU’s and 50% Clerics.  These will be either 1st level (50%), 2nd level (40%) or 3rd level (10%).
For example, a colony of 80 Grobbits will be comprised of:
·         Chief
·         2 Sergeants
·         3 Corporals
·         2 Spell-casters (1 MU, 1 CL)
·         32 normal male Grobbits
·         20 Females & 20 Young

  1. You're right we do need a "dark halfling" (heh). With all respect to Arduin, maybe they shouldn't be gray since duergar are "gray Dwarves." How about indigo? Indigo Halfings would be cool. ;)

    1. I never thought of that! Cool. But if I was statting Gollum, I would delete the missile bonus and add a "Strangulation" ability.
